17.3c Paragraphs containing multiple reference markers.

When there is reference to more than one long note in a paragraph, regardless of the print symbols, numbers, or letters, insert the braille asterisk followed by the unspaced number 1 () at the first point of reference, number 2 () at the second, and so on. At the end of the paragraph each footnote, preceded by its identifying numbered asterisk and a space (do not include a period), is brailled as a separate paragraph. Begin each in cell 7 with runover lines starting in cell 5.

Note: Literary format should not be used for heavily annotated study texts such as those that use both numbered and lettered footnote indicators or have all of the notes compiled in a note section at the end of each chapter or at the end of the book. Such books should be brailled according to the rules in Braille Formats: Principles of Print to Braille Transcription.
